Two lives on very different paths learn truths about each other that send them on a collision course with destiny

A transitional film at the end of his first decade of filmmaking, James Benning’s Grand Opera introduces a degree of storytelling to his previously more formalist devices. Benning calls the film his “first attempt at writing my own kind of history” and, in a sense, it also serves to write himself into history, acutely measuring his place as a Midwestern experimental filmmaker, then based in Oklahoma, in relationship to the avant-garde scene situated in New York. The film thus features homages to the prominent experimental cinema of the time, including a spoof of Wavelength, as well as cameos from Michael Snow, Hollis Frampton and Yvonne Rainer. Woven with these sequences are other characteristic Benning gambits – a compilation of every house he ever lived in, a preoccupation with the history of Pi, and the looming threat that a building will explode.

Frank Allen, a professional speaker who lectures on time management has a perfectly ordered and scheduled life, down to the minute. When his wife sets his clock forward 10 minutes as a joke, his day is thrown off. Deciding that his strictly ordered life has done him little good, he begins to make multiple choice index cards, choosing one at random and doing what is written on the card.

Űrpiknik / Garbage Theory is a dramedy webbed through with the elements of sci-fi, which tells the story of one night spent by an alien lacking self-appreciation and a troubled university student in Budapest. Panna is a lonely university student who is incapable of forming human relationships, until Boy, the self-loathing alien arrives due to her signals sent to space. Boy tells Panna that the planet is doomed and he is only interested in saving his one admired artist, Sarolta Zalatnay. The two strangers form a unit, Panna helps Boy to fulfill his plan, and the alien takes her to the unknown planet in return.Panna and Boy meet unusual characters and extraordinary situations during the adventure lasting a night, which open up the world in front of them; Panna learns to form bonds and Boy finds home in the universe: on planet Earth.
